  • THX® Certified Select™

THX Certified Select products are designed for medium sized rooms up to 56 cubic meters (2,000 cubic feet) in volume with a 3–3.6 m (10–12 ft.) viewing distance from the screen. Only the very best A/V receivers can withstand rigorous THX testing to gain certification and so guarantee the same volume and sound quality experienced in a commercial theater in the home theater environment. THX engineers analyze every aspect of audio performance, from noise levels and distortion to frequency response and bass management in over 1,000 laboratory bench tests. Power output is tested to ensure the receiver accurately plays source material at THX Reference Level in every input and mode and at every sampling rate for all possible playback combinations. THX require an 80 Hz crossover in the setup menu to enable bass management in every THX Certified A/V receiver, while signal-to-noise ratio is examined for requisite performance. A number of THX technologies within user-selectable listening modes designed to optimize specific content. The modes comprise THX CINEMA MODE, THX GAME MODE, THX MUSIC MODE, and THX SURROUND EX. Technologies included in these modes comprise RE-EQ, which establishes a more accurate tonal balance in home theaters for soundtracks mixed for playback in large auditoriums with an array of speakers; TIMBRE MATCHING, which restores frequency balance between front and surround speakers; and BOUNDARY GAIN COMPENSATION, which corrects the way low-frequency sound is perceived when seated near a wall. THX Loudness Plus™ is a volume control technology featured in THX Certified Select A/V receivers that automatically adjusts the front-to-back speaker-level relationship as the volume is turned down for improved balance.

  • Dolby Atmos®

Dolby Atmos uses object-oriented mixing to layer independent audio elements through discrete channels, moving three-dimensional sound effects around the theater with astonishing realism. The format adapts to any home cinema layout incorporating height channels for a more enveloping soundfield with extremely accurate directional and overhead effects.

  • DTS:X

DTS:X is an object-based audio technology from DTS. New mixing techniques allow content creators to mix in a multi-dimensional space, freeing sound from the traditional channel bed and allowing effects to be placed or panned anywhere in the front, center, surround, or height speakers. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create a rich, realistic and immersive soundscape with extreme accuracy. When played through a DTS:X-compatible Onkyo receiver with one or two pairs of front/rear height, in-ceiling, or upfiring Dolby Atmos®-compatible speakers added to traditional 5.1-, 7.1-, or 9.1-channel configurations, the format automatically adapts to any speaker setup for optimal results. The format is playable on most Blu-ray Disc players set to bitstream output and connected to a compatible Onkyo A/V receiver with seven or more channels. DTS:X also sounds great played back through non-DTS:X compatible Onkyo A/V receivers.

  • Hi-Res Audio (High-Resolution Audio)

Onkyo products displaying the Hi-Res logo can play a variety of 24-bit digital audio formats with sampling rates of up to 192 kHz. Compared to audio on Compact Disc (encoded at 16-bit resolution with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz), 24/96 and 24/192 Hi-Res formats deliver a more accurate representation of the original analog source because they contain more information. Depending on the quality of the original recording and how it was captured, this means professionally mastered Hi-Res music sounds clearer, more detailed, and more realistic—similar to the difference between 480 x 720 video on DVD and 1080 x 1920 video on Blu-ray Disc.

  • 384 kHz/32-Bit Audio DAC

A powerful 384 kHz/32-bit digital-to-analog conversion engine from Asahi Kasei Microdevices transforms Hi-Res PCM digital signals up to 192 kHz/24-bit resolution and 2.8 MHz/5.6 MHz DSD into a smooth and virtually noiseless analog signal. The DAC device reduces audio degradation and jitter by employing advanced digital filtering technology.

  • AccuEQ Room Calibration

AccuEQ is an Onkyo-original room acoustic calibration technology that measures and corrects speaker distances, output levels, crossover frequencies, and frequency response to ensure balanced surround-sound. It works to eliminate standing waves (sounds of the same frequency that collide and obscure the audio image) and also reduces slap-echo from floor and walls. Calibration is performed without altering the loudspeaker’s natural acoustic personality. AccuEQ incorporates AccuReflex technology, which aligns the timing of sound bounced off the ceiling by upfiring speakers (used to reproduce height effects in object-based audio) so it arrives at the listening position in-phase with sound from the other speakers. This ensures clear and realistic audio performance. Further, AccuEQ enables playback of 7.1-channel formats at 96 kHz without downsampling.

  • Dynamic Audio Amplification

Dynamic Audio Amplification aims to deliver an emotionally moving listening experience. At its heart are a massive high-output transformer, audio-grade capacitors, and discrete amplifiers to deliver high current to the speakers. High current controls the speaker drivers with confidence and precision and enables instantaneous reaction to sudden dynamic changes. Refined over 70 years, the original amp circuits use sophisticated control technology to prevent phase shift and distortion for imaging clarity, while capturing the widest possible audio frequency spectrum to preserve the energy of the original recording, from floor-shaking bass to the highest harmonic overtones. Combined with noise-free D/A conversion technology, Dynamic Audio Amplification makes listening a joyous experience.

  • VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry)

Virtually removes digital pulse noise for a smooth analog signal.
Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can't remove it completely. VLSC employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result—a virtually noiseless, smooth, analog signal based on the digital source that brings out even the most subtle of nuances in music sources (including DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD), DVD Video sources (including high-definition), broadcasts, digital music files such as MP3s, and gaming content.
